As life expectancy in the developed world increases and populations age, the incidence and associated morbidity of chronic and acute pain is increasing and placing a higher level of emphasis on pain management as a quality-of-life issue for patients and their families. To address this trend clinicians are increasingly turning to fentanyl, a narcotic analgesic significantly more powerful than morphine that is available in sustained release dosage forms from a number of drug suppliers. Fentanyl has demonstrated effectiveness against breakthrough pain and has become a commonly prescribed pain medication for most forms of cancer. Controlled release formulations that include transdermal patches and transmucosal tablets and lozenges help address the issues of patient safety and prescription narcotic drug abuse. Pipeline products include oral inhaler and next-generation spray devices. Annual growth through 2015 will exceed ten percent on a prescription basis, but will be lower on a revenue basis due to the impact of generics.
