In terms of dosing regimens and patient compliance, neurological disorders represent one of the most challenging areas of therapeutic medicine. Patients diagnosed with conditions such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and manic depressive disorder are often not physically and/or mentally capable of reliably following dosing instructions for the medications that they’ve been prescribed. The availability of approved drugs for neurological disorders with extended release profiles creates the potential to improve patient compliance by extending the time between dosing intervals. Drugs that have been formulated as extended release versions include a number of well-known APIs that have traditionally been marketed as immediate release products. Currently approved CNS drugs include extended release formulations for a dozen separate neurological indications. While the majority of these drugs are oral (tablets or capsules) formulations, the number of extended release injectable and transdermal drugs for CNS conditions is increasing.
