Cardiac Mapping Systems: Evolving Technology, Expanding Opportunities

Patient morbidity and mortality due to compromised or impaired cardiovascular health is one of the most significant healthcare segments worldwide, particularly in developed economies.  As the median population increases with improved preventative and interventional medicine, the challenge of treating cardiac pathologies and insufficiencies will continue to grow. One of the more prominent conditions presenting to clinicians will continue to be heart rhythm disorders. Atrial fibrillation affects more than 2 million in the U.S. alone and is a known embolism risk. The risk of developing atrial fibrillation increases past age 65. Tissue ablation remains the most common treatment for heart rhythm disorders that cannot be controlled by medication. Successful treatment relies on identifying and locating heart tissue malformations that are implicated in disrupting the heart’s normal electrical pattern. Patients undergoing ablation have historically been exposed to radiation. The mapping systems available today eliminate this risk and incorporate a number of features that aid the clinician and simplify the procedure. These integrated systems, and several alternative technologies with which they compete, are positioned to change the existing protocols for treating rhythm disturbances.
