As the number of asthmatics, COPD, and
allergy patients continues to grow, the upper respiratory treatment
market is attracting a number of new companies – companies with some
novel approaches to the problem of chronic airway inflammation and
reactive airway disease. These
companies are conducting ongoing research into the way asthma and COPD
are diagnosed and measured, minimally invasive techniques to treat
airway congestion, and technology improvements focused on systemic
delivery of proteins and peptides as well as novel small molecule
therapeutics. New drug classes that focus on molecular targets are
emerging as important tools for practitioners. Interest is growing among
practitioners and their patients for treatments that are capable of
delivering two drugs that can act in concert to mitigate the effects of
airway inflammation and reactive airway disease better than a single drug. These combination
products pair drugs with different indications to maximize patient
relief
